Rebound Therapy Founder Receives Award

The founder of Rebound Therapy, Eddy Anderson MCSP, Cert Ed, has been awarded the 'npower Special Award for Outstanding Achievement' at the npower / FDSO annual disability sports awards at Leeds United football stadium, which took place on 19th March 2010.

The MC for the event was Yorkshire TV's sports commentator Roger Greenwood, who paid tribute to Eddy for being the founder of Rebound Therapy and one of the pioneers of sport for disabled people.

He praised Eddy's 40 years of dedication to what he believes in, his relentless work ethic, his enthusiasm to find solutions for people with disabilities; and above all, the fact that he is a man who has made a massive difference to the lives of people with a disability.

He stated that during the past 12 months Eddy and his team have been awarded corporate affiliation to the CPD Institute, been granted a three-year "approved provider" status by afPE (the Association for Physical Education), and in January this year formed a partnership working arrangement with the English Federation of Disability Sports.

He went on to say that although now in his early 70s, Eddy's energy and enthusiasm for his work is undiminished and he still works full time delivering Rebound Therapy courses.

He also detailed some of Eddy's other achievements including the fact that he is the inventor of “Floatsation”, a water based buoyancy system that enables people with profound disabilities to enjoy water activities in a safe and secure environment.

Eddy attended the awards event with his colleagues Paul and Shirley Kaye.

The award was presented by npower's Bridget Oxley.

New Harmony Wheelchair Lift

Launched this week at Naidex, the new Terry Harmony Wheelchair Lift will be available to buy from Dolphin Mobility.

The internal car dimensions of 755mm X 1175mm is the largest useable space for a standard wheelchair model on the market. The standard width has increase by 45mm allowing easier access into the lift for self propelled wheelchair users.

Low floor construction provides a reduced gradient of ramp on entry, therefore, requiring less effort and providing more control on accessing the lift. This also applies when exiting the lift, resulting in increased comfort and peace of mind for the user.

There is an adjustable floor frame, which allows the lift installation to accommodate a slope of up to 15mm away from the lift. This helps to improve access for the user as well making life easier for the lift installer when setting up.

Swimming Pool Float Sling for Disabled Hoists

In 2009, revenues were $65.7 million compared to $51.9 million in 2008. Sales in North America increased $9,374 or 43% to $31.1 million driven by increased sales in both the United States and Canada. Risks to Service users known to self-hoist and transfer using ceiling track hoists

The purpose of this Safety Notice is to alert health and social care providers to potential risks to service users whom are likely to self-hoist and transfer without the assistance of a carer(s).

Oxford Dipper Pool Lift - Socket Blanking Plug

There are three types of socket available for the Oxford Dipper pool lift. When correctly fitted the top of the 'A' and 'B' sockets will be 12mm below the floor level. The socket is supplied with a bkanking plu, seen below, to prevent ingress of water when the mast has been removed for storage. When fitted the top of the blanking plug is flush with the floor level and the metal 'key' can be unsrewed form the top of the plug to ensure that no tripping hazard exists.

The Oxford Dipper 'C' socket is surface mounted and stands proud of the floor by 150mm, therefore, no blanking plug is required.

Newport man died after being trapped in hoist - inquest

GWENT’S coroner has asked Newport city council to review mechanical hoists it installs in disabled people's homes following the death of a paraplegic man who became trapped while trying to move on to his bed.

Newport coroner’s court heard yesterday how Michael Powell, 53, died at his Newport home in January last year after becoming entangled in a mechanical ceiling hoist.

But Gwent coroner David Bowen said Mr Powell, who lived alone, could have been saved if he had had an emergency panic button to summon help.

Mr Powell, of Pontfaen Road, Newport, lost the use of his legs in a speedway accident in 1975. In 2000 he had ceiling hoists installed in his bedroom and bathroom organised by Monwell Hankinson - a department of Newport city council which provides support for disabled people.

Mechanical engineer Jamie Davies told the coroner and a jury the hoists were not designed to be used without the help of a carer, and although Mr Powell was living with his wife when they were installed, he continued using the hoists alone after the couple divorced in 2002.

On January 21 2008, Mr Powell was using the hoist to move from his wheelchair to his bed when the hand held control panel fell off the cord attaching it to the mechanical lift.

Mr Powell could no longer move the hoist, and ergonomics expert Jeremy Ferreira said it was likely that, in an effort to reach the detached control panel, Mr Powell had “inverted” himself in his seat and become trapped.

A post mortem showed Mr Powell died as a result of positional asphyxia and alcohol intoxication, and tests showed he had a blood alcohol level of 212 per cent - more than two and a half times the drink drive limit of 80 per cent.

Pathologist Dr Ian Thompson said this high level of alcohol could have contributed to Mr Powell’s breathing problems.

After the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, Mr Bowen said he would be writing to Newport city council urging them to carry out an immediate assessment of all disabled people using hoists without carers' assistance, stressing anyone using the hoists alone should be given emergency call buttons.

A spokesman for Newport city council said a review was already under way for disabled people living alone who used hoists, and would await any further recommendations from the coroner.

Prism Medical double mobility deal - July 2009

The corporate division of Birmingham law firm Martineau has acted for a Canadian medical firm in the acquisition of two domestic mobility companies.

Prism Medical successfully acquired Test Valley Mobility and Saluss, with the deals representing a total investment of more than £2 million into the UK economy.

It also gives the Ontario firm the number-one position in the UK patient handling equipment market, significantly boosting its dealership network.

The patient handling equipment market, which includes devices such as hoists, lifts and door openers, is a growth market in the UK, supported by a significant demographic shift towards an ageing population and increased Government funding in this sector.

Stuart Meldrum, the Prism UK chief executive, said: “We have a strong presence in the UK with existing operations but the acquisition of Test Valley Mobility and Saluss gives us a significant lead in terms of our ability to fulfil and service NHS contracts and national care home groups.

The key management of the distributor have entered into employment contracts and will continue to be responsible for the day to day operations.

The full colour 456-page guide has over 1,000 entries, and includes a wide range of accessible accommodation, as well as attractions, equipment hire and other services. It has 50 pages of featured editorial, and an extensive section on Getting There and Back.

The new guide is supported by the national tourist agencies VisitEngland, VisitScotland and VisitWales, and it includes all accommodation providers assessed under the National Accessible Scheme, as well those inspected under schemes operated by VisitScotland, and VisitLondon. Information has also been drawn from a range of organisations including the Automobile Association, the British Hospitality Association, and the Regional Development Agencies. It includes some properties who are self-assessed, who will be subject to a mystery shopping check on the accuracy of the data.

Bank loses disabled access appeal

This week RBS lost their appeal against a ruling that they must provide wheelchair access for a disabled customer in their Sheffield branch. The decision could have huge complications for all businesses.

The Court of Appeal today confirmed that the Royal Bank of Scotland had breached the Disability Discrimination Act by failing to provide access to its Sheffield branch for wheelchair users.

RBS had appealed the decision following a landmark judgment earlier this year in a case brought by David Allen, a wheelchair user, which was funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The original decision of the County Court was the first time that an injunction had been granted ordering work to be carried out on business premises to make a building accessible. Mr Allen was also awarded £6,500, the highest amount of compensation ever awarded in a case under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Through Floor Lifts

Mobility company given injunction

A COMPANY which provides wheelchairs and mobility aids has been ordered to trade legally after more than 100 complaints about them were received.

An interim injunction was granted against ABM Mobility to trade legally and fairly at a hearing at Nottingham County Court.

The firm, based in Gainsborough Business Park in Long Eaton, can continue trading as long as they abide by the rules, otherwise more serious action may be taken.

Prism Medical announces acquisition of supplier of moving and handling services

VAUGHAN, ON, Nov. 9 /CNW/ - PRISM MEDICAL LTD. (TSX-V:PM) ("Prism") today announced that it has completed the acquisition of a UK supplier of moving and handling services for the mobility impaired effective November 6, 2009. The acquisition cost was $0.8m which was satisfied by a cash payment of $0.4m and deferred payments in the amount $0.4m. The deferred payments are repayable over 3 years together with interest at 7% over a term of 3 years. 

The company services and maintains a wide variety of equipment including ceiling lifts, baths and beds into both long term care and acute care facilities throughout England and Wales.

Andrew A. McIntyre, Chairman and CEO of Prism stated, "The acquisition continues our expansion into the provision of services for our customers. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to earnings in the current fiscal year and will strengthen Prism's ability to execute its strategic plans."

Rogue traders warning for Stourbridge residents

STOURBRIDGE residents are being warned to watch out for high pressure sales people targeting vulnerable people in the area.

Dudley Council’s adult social care team and trading standards officers are urging people to be wary of representatives of any firms claiming to have connections to social services.

Trading watchdogs say shady firms, including a group known as ABM Mobility, may be at work in the region.

Officers say dodgy trading techniques include missing appointments and sales people pressurising customers to buy large pieces of equipment such as stairlifts and beds.

Disabled in Walsall 'punished' by funding cut

WALSALL Council stands accused of 'punishing the most vulnerable' of its residents after slashing its funding for supporting disabled people.

Disabled Facilities Grants, which fund the installation of equipment to support disabled residents in their homes, have been cut from £5.6 million in 2006/7 to £2.2 million this financial year.

EU directive may discourage new buy-to-let investors

The EU is currently examining a proposed directive that would require all residential landlords in the 27 member union to ensure that every rental property is accessible to those with physical disabilities. Current regulations in the UK only require landlords to make these modifications and invest in the appropriate infrastructure if they have a tenant with a disability. The new rules, however, would make these changes necessary, even if a given property has been rented out over the long-term to a tenant without any known disabilities and, as such, the new infrastructure would never be used.

This legislation, drafted by the European Commission (EC), would require landlords to add ramps to their properties, wherever there are steps to climb outside the building, add new, accessible washroom facilities and Landlord Assist, an organization that provides help when it comes to tenant evictions, believes that the legislation might also require the installation of very costly stair lifts.

Hospital launches ceiling hoist fundraising drive

A HOUSE to House Collection in aid of New Ross Community Hospital is to be carried out in every home in New Ross town throughout the month of October.

Following a very successful meeting in the Community Hospital on Wednesday night, a team of over 40 people have been assigned various parts of the town for this voluntary collection.

Organised by a newly established fundraising committee in New Ross Community Hospital, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the facility, all funds raised through this initiative will go towards the costly project of installing muchneeded ceiling hoists in the hospital.

'A few years ago the board of directors had investigated the possibility of installing ceiling hoists, which would greatly enhance the quality of care and respect the dignity of patients, but preliminary costings and lack of finance ruled this out. The fundraising committee which was formed in February decided to undertake raising the necessary funds to make the installation of ceiling hoists a reality,' said Frances Ryan, Chairperson of the Board of Directors.

According to Frances, it has been 20 years since New Ross Community Hospital has made a general appeal to the public for financial support.

'When we appealed to the community for assistance 20 years after the District Hospital was closed by the South Eastern Health Board in 1987 the response was magnificent. Contributions received enabled the company to equip the hospital, employ staff and get up and going. Acting on the response of the community to its closure, a company limited by guarantee was formed, the building leased by the company from the Health Board and New Ross Community Hospital became a reality when it opened in January 1989,' explained Frances. 'We are very mindful and appreciative of the very generous contributions from individuals, families, clubs, organisations, businesses, factories and companies on an ongoing basis, but we now need our wider community's help,' she said.

New Ross Community Hospital is unique as it is a registered charity managed by a voluntary board of directors and run 'by the people – for the people'
